We may take it for granted of our ability to speak and listen with ease in daily communication. But surprisingly, we know very little about the brain mechanism underlying this cycle of speech production and perception. At the same time, millions of people are suffering from hearing and communication disorders, hoping for innovative treatment and rehabilitation. In my lab, we are searching for the neural codes of sound and speech representations in the brain. Collaborating with neurosurgeons, we investigate the speech network of the human brain by measuring neural activities inside the patients’ brain, also known as intracranial EEG. Using high temporal resolution EEG and high spatial resolution MRI to analyze a massive amount of human brain data, we have been able to piece together a full picture of the speaking and listening brain. This not only allows us to build effective brain-computer interfaces for disabled patients, but is also tremendously useful for developing a smarter speech recognition system, like Siri on your cell phone.
